Converting Mbps to MB/s: What You Need to Know
When you sign up for a new internet plan, the speed is almost always advertised in Megabits per second (Mbps). However, when you use a download time calculator or download a game, your computer shows the speed in Megabytes per second (MB/s).
Why the difference? Bits (b) are used by networking equipment to measure data transfer speed, while Bytes (B) are used by computers to measure file sizes.
Since there are 8 bits in a byte, you must divide your internet speed by 8 to find your actual download speed.
For example, if you have a 100 Mbps internet connection, your maximum theoretical download speed is 100 / 8 = 12.5 MB/s. To calculate the reverse, use our MB/s to Mbps converter.
